Challenge
Kubernetes is the technology of the future for orchestration and deployment of applications, programming interfaces and machine learning tasks with high, scaling resource consumption. It was therefore important for our customer to make Kubernetes available to its development teams across the company in the cloud. A particular challenge was the combination of security standards that apply within the company and a user-friendly work-order process.
Approach
To find the right balance between security and user-friendliness, the entire work-order process was run through several times in different phases in collaboration with the customer’s IT department and the cloud provider. In the PoC phase, the requirements of a typical work-order process were first defined and formalized. Subsequently, these processes were tested and further refined under real-life conditions in a pilot phase with the help of a dashboard already used in the group. We paid particular attention to the ability of the provided applications to integrate with the company-wide authentication system. In the final MVP phase, Kubernetes and its work-order process were finally transferred to live operation of the IT application.
Results
Kubernetes has been implemented throughout the company as the standard operating platform for cloud applications, taking into account the applying security standards, and is already being used productively by many development teams for a wide variety of projects. The continuous inclusion of new requirement profiles promises intensive use within the company in the future as well.
