Why ethical principles are important

With the advancement of a technology that has such an impact on all areas of our lives come great opportunities but also great risks. There have been repeated cases where AI systems did not work as expected, systematically disadvantaged certain groups, or were used for ethically questionable purposes.

As a result, any company or individual developing AI systems should think very carefully about the impact the AI system will or could have on society, specific groups, or even individuals.

Our AI principles serve as a compass at our daily work and decision-making. They help us ensure that our developments and efforts support and empower people, while minimizing potential risks from the outset.

Seven principles for
working with AI

We have developed the statworx AI principles together with employees from the entire company. They describe optimal target states that serve as orientation for our work.

Human-centered

We believe that AI will transform all aspects of our world. We aim to create AI solutions that help and enable people in their life and work. When developing AI systems, we consider social, political, and economical factors while respecting cultural and ethical norms.

Ecological

The development, training and application of AI systems is resource intensive. We believe it is crucial to minimize the use of energy and computational hardware, and the related greenhouse gas emissions when working with AI.

Respectful

Introducing new technologies often comes with high impact. When developing AI systems, we seek to respect the interests, self-determination and privacy of all involved parties.

Fair

The past has shown that AI systems may inherit unfair biases. This risk has high relevance for us when designing new AI systems. We strive to create solutions that treat all humans equitably and fair.

Transparent

AI systems are often perceived as black boxes whose decisions cannot be retraced. We consider it important, in most cases, to implement explainability measures to increase trust and understanding of the algorithm. Furthermore, we believe that people who use, interact with, or are affected by an AI system should be informed about the presence of AI and how decisions are made.

Collaborative

AI is a technology that comes with endless opportunities but also big challenges. We believe that a key to successful adoption of AI in Germany and Europe is to collaborate with different actors from economy, society and politics.

Inclusive

Most people interact with or are affected by AI systems day-to-day. We believe that everyone should face AI systems in a conscious, informed, and reflected manner. Thus, we contribute to the AI competencies and literacy of individuals.
