Data quality is a fundamental component of successful data governance and plays a crucial role in data-driven companies. A leading company in the pharmaceutical sector faced the task of raising its employees’ awareness of the various dimensions of data quality. The challenge was to convey this complex topic in an interactive and engaging manner to promote the workforce’s engagement and willingness to learn.
Approach
To meet this challenge, statworx developed an innovative, interactive web application called “Data Quality Challenge.” This application confronted users with a realistic scenario where they had to identify and address various data quality issues through targeted actions.
Key features of the application:
- Introductory Video: The challenge begins with a video that explains the basics of data quality and introduces participants to the topic.
- Real-time Interaction: Users are presented with a sales forecast that needs improvement. As the underlying data is examined and adjustments are made, the forecast updates in real-time.
- Time-limited Challenge: A 5-minute time window adds extra incentive and increases the excitement of identifying all data quality issues in time.
- Performance Dashboard: After completing the challenge, participants receive a dashboard showing their performance compared to other players. A second attempt is offered if needed.
- Single and Team Games: The application allows both single and team games, with the latter enabling filtering by team performance.
Results
The Data Quality Challenge proved to be a great success. Hundreds of users have utilized the application to test and expand their knowledge of data quality. The gamified approach enabled employees to explore the various dimensions of data quality in an engaging and practical way.
